I love to create new things from something else. The challenge that was presented to me was turning a blanket into something. The blanket was very lightweight. I have no idea what the fiber content was. I did a burn test and believe it to be made from cotton. I was digging through my patterns and fell upon a suit. Why a suit you ask. I thought the cut of the suit would go well with the pattern on the blanket. Which is all white. Hindsight I think I would have chosen a different style to play with oh well. No one wears suits around here. The first thing I did was to find an embroidery pattern. Pinterest is a great place to find ideas. I also look through magazines at the book stores. Here is the inspiration for my suit.
Then I went looking for my version of the embroidery to be done on my embroidery machine. I chose an intricate design of spider mums. I also changed out the colors from the original embroidery to have shades of blue instead of pinks.
I had to figure out the placement of the design on the jacket. I was not sure about wanting to do the embroidery on the sleeves also. So, here goes with the embroidery.
I used a medium weight stabilizer and a topper since the blanket, although not thick it was bumpy. I used Robinson Anton embroidery thread and the pattern I believe is from Urban Threads. I did chose to embroider the bottom fronts of the jacket and decided not to do the sleeves.
For me to start a project like this I need to have an inspiration, whether I draw it or see a photo in a magazine or Pinterest. Then I look at clothing already made or fabric or a combination of the two. Then I must decide if I am going to embroider on it and where. It is always easier if you are sewing the garment or project from the beginning. It is so much easier to hoop.
I liked it as a vest and had to take pictures for inspiration for future projects.
Next, I had to decide on the front closure. I was originally thinking that I wanted a gold zipper to bring out the tan colors in the embroidery. I searched everywhere and was unsuccessful. So, in the end I decided to use covered large hooks and eyes. I decided after the fact that I wanted to line the jacket and had to go back and fix that before I went any further. To finish off the outfit, did I want a skirt or pants. In the end I chose pants.
