If you are anything like me organizing your sewing room or space is the last thing on your mind. Yet, it is a necessary thing that we all need to do. I have found because I am terrible at organizing my stuff I end up going out and buying yet another item. I end up having 5 seam rippers and 10 pin cushions and so on. The first thing I chose to organize was my patterns.
I may have shown this in a previous blog article but here goes. I actually cut my patterns open and glue them to a manila envelope.
I am using cardboard file boxes and the manila envelopes fit perfectly. As you can see I have a huge amount of patterns.
I am not quite done with this project yet. Once I get them all in the boxes I will cover them with fabric. Then I am going to have a box for tops, a box for pants etc. Each of the boxes will have a label on the front so I know what is inside. I will share that with you when I get to that point, should be very soon.
Next idea is for how to store you stabilizers for your clothing construction. You could also use the for your machine embroidery also. You will want to collect the cardboard from wrapping paper to wrap you stabilizer around. This idea came from Super Mommy No Cape .
I would advise to stock up on interfacing for sewing when you can use coupons at Joann’s. I still have bins to go through to get all my interfacing sorted. I put as much information as I can on the cardboard around the interfacing. Things like 100% Polyester and how to wash and dry it. Where I got this idea from she put her rolled pieces in a long plastic bin. This idea is a good one. keep your fabrics and interfacing safe from dust, mice and water.
Now for more organization ideas for your sewing space. Put your cotton fabrics possibly color code them. Have a swatch on a ring so you do not have to go in the bin unless your really need to. I would even go so far as write the fabric info on the back of the card.
This is a great idea also. A fabric catalog of all your stash. Then when you want to make something you pull out your stash book and look and not dig through all your fabrics. I have started one for cottons, one for knits, one for decorator fabrics. (Pinterest)
This idea may not work on all spools of thread but it is a great idea and a way to keep your bobbin with the same thread together. (Pinterest)
Here is another way to store your threads. This was a custom made item but you can get creative.
I am a big fan of putting things in containers that seal because of all the dust the accumulates in the sewing room. So, in my sewing room (studio) I am slowly converting all my sewing notions into closed containers. Here are some examples.
I am a very messy crafting and sewing person and usually have my cutting table full of projects most days. The problem with that is I know I have a certain tool or fabric or button etc. but, I can’t find it so I go buy another one. In an effort to downsize and clean up my sewing/craft space I am having to get cabinets to store and organize what I have. I will be showing you my upcycled cabinets in a later article.
