For those of us where are children are grown and even if they don’t really trick or treat any longer here is an idea for you. Personally I love holidays, all holidays. I love decorating for them, I love cooking for them and love having friends over to share with my excitement. I feel the more creative you get the more fun you can have. So I have been working on many of this years decorations. This years theme is witches. I am decorating like crazy and creating all I can for the least amount of money spent. To be followed by food for movie night. All of this to be done while you have trick or treaters at the front door. I love seeing all the costumes and the cute little kids, even to the high school kids. I absolutely love children of all ages. They feed my joy over the holidays. Any reason to get together with family is great.
To share a few of my Halloween decorations, I made a witches hat. As with everything that I do, I try to make decorations with as little money as possible. I bought the fabric, flowers and ribbon at Joann’s and of course used coupons where I can.
The materials I used
Felt fabric- your choice in color
Flowers and greenery of choice to go on to the hat. You can actually put what ever you want to decorate the hat.
Ribbon of your choice.
The pattern I used for the hat.. did not have one. I created it as I went along. I made the base of the hat a bit larger than I would if I wore it. I have colored roving sitting on the hat because I was thinking of felting some leaves and flowers. But, that would have created a lot of work that was not necessary to the project. I cut two layers of the brim and cut a flexible wire around the edge and felted the wire in between the layers. Not intending to wear the hat so I cut wires so I could shape the hat. I did not sew the wires in and in hindsight I think it would have been better if I had. Once I had the top of the hat cut out I sewed it to the brim. I thought about felting them together but that was time consuming and will be covered by a ribbon so I chose not to.
Next I bought candle holders at the Arc store for 1.99 each and painted them black and added jute on them. Pretty simple to do and will make a difference on my table. I put white taper candles in the candle holders. These were added to the table scape for Halloween. Once I got home I cleaned the candle holders with alcohol. I used black paint and painted the holders with two coats of paint. When they were dried I put one coat of mod podge as a sealer. When the sealer was dry I wrapped jute around various places on each candle holder.
Now that I have shared a couple projects with you I want to share some of the food ideas that we will have on Halloween. I decided that since we would have so many door interrupts during the dinner hour I decided we would make our dinner all finger foods and I was going to make all healthy food. But not look healthy more of with a Halloween flare. The menu is:
Pumpkins soup
lots of fruit and vegetables
and cupcakes
all photos of food was from Pinterest. I will photograph all the foods I end up making. I forgot to add popcorn if you are going to watch movies like we are. Now that food is thought out I plan to have a few friends over and we are planning a movie marathon to watch while handing out candy to kids. I created a list of movies I like that are Halloween or witch related that are my favorite:
Wizard of Oz
Beetlejuice
Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein
Casper, Casper Meets Wendy
Ghostbusters (1&2 and newest one with all women)
Hocus Pocus
The Worst Witch
Addams Family
Addams Family Values
Practical Magic
Maleficent
Harry Potter – any or all of them
The Good Witch
Till next time,
Roxanne
